When I started as Yarra Riverkeeper I was ignorant of flows, envionmental flows, and ‘diversion was an entertainment an ‘consumptive’ was something to with TB. It was a steep and exciting learning curve. The Yarra Environmental Water Plan, says in 2018 that the environmental water flows is in its early days of thinking.There were Yarra flows studies in 2005, 2012 and then 2018. Environmental flows are all about the right water at the right time in sufficient quantity. The government made promises in the Central and Gippsland Flows for the Yarra Birratung which have yet to be delivered several years in. So a flows study is timely to reinforce the need for the flows. We made an early submission to study as did the Concerned Waterways Alliance.
